The posts claimed that miners in Zamfara State had discovered “Vampire Diamonds”—a rare, high-value mineral that naturally glows in the dark. The story suggested that international jewelry brands were already flocking to the state, and the find would make Zamfara the wealthiest region in Africa overnight.
The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development conducted an investigation and confirmed that no such mineral exists in the Nigerian geological record. Mineralogists who reviewed the viral images determined that they were AI-generated or “photoshopped” versions of common garnets or synthetic crystals. There is no diamond variant known to science that possesses natural bioluminescence or glows red in the manner depicted in the videos.
The Zamfara State government also warned residents against being lured into illegal mining activities by these fraudulent claims. Security agencies pointed out that these rumors are often spread by criminal syndicates to create “mining rushes,” which allow them to operate under the cover of the resulting chaos. The Ministry reminded the public that all significant mineral discoveries are officially announced through the National Geological Survey Agency after rigorous testing and verification.
