A viral video surfaced on April 17, 2026, purportedly showing a large campaign billboard with the “Renewed Hope” slogan and images of the President inside the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja. The video was used by several online commentators to suggest that the electoral body had lost its neutrality and was openly endorsing the ruling party ahead of future electoral cycles. This sparked intense debate regarding the “institutional preparedness” of INEC for the 2027 general elections.
Following an immediate investigation, fact checkers and independent journalists confirmed that no such billboard exists on the INEC premises. Digital forensics revealed that the video was a “spatial deepfake,” where a digital campaign graphic was layered over actual footage of the INEC lobby using advanced augmented reality (AR) editing tools. The lighting on the digital billboard did not match the ambient light of the hallway, and the reflection on the floor showed a blank wall instead of the campaign imagery seen in the foreground.
INEC spokesperson, Nurudeen Akewushola, addressed the media, stating that the commission remains a non partisan body dedicated to the integrity of the democratic process. He noted that this is part of a “coordinated disinformation campaign” designed to undermine public trust in democratic institutions. The commission has since invited members of the press for a walk through of the headquarters to prove that the facilities remain free of any political branding. This incident highlights the growing threat of AI generated content in Nigeria’s political space, where visual evidence can no longer be taken at face value. Citizens are urged to be skeptical of “leaked” videos from sensitive government buildings that appear only on anonymous social media accounts.
