The Federal Ministry of Works announced in April 2026 that the 43-kilometre dualization project for the Aba–Port Harcourt highway reached a major milestone with the substantial completion of the Aba-bound carriageway. The project, which is a vital economic corridor linking the industrial hub of Abia State with the port city of Rivers State, has been a priority for the administration’s infrastructure agenda.
The Minister of Works, Engr David Umahi, during a final inspection tour in early April, confirmed that the contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), had successfully reached over 90 percent completion on the designated lane. The ministry had specifically directed that resources be concentrated on this section to ensure it was ready for public use and official commissioning during the President’s planned visit to the South-South region in May 2026.
While funding delays had previously hampered the project’s progress in 2025, the ministry secured the necessary billions in outstanding payments to sustain momentum through the first quarter of 2026. In addition to the road surface, the completed sections feature reinforced concrete technology, solar powered streetlights, and speed monitoring systems. Work on the Port Harcourt-bound carriageway, which is being handled by an indigenous contractor using full reinforced concrete pavement, is ongoing and expected to be completed later in the year.
